Lyme Dissease History, Prevention and
Alternative Treatment Options

▸ Lyme Disease History

Lyme disease was first recognized in the U.S. in 1975, after a mysterious outbreak of arthritis near Lyme, Connecticut. It was not until 1982 that the spirochete that caused Lyme, Borrelia burgdorrferi (Bb), was identified. Lyme disease is a multisystem inflammatory disease, at first affecting the skin in characterisc "bull's-eye" rashes (only 30% to 40% of adult patients exhibit these, however, and less than 10% of infected children) then spreading to the joints and nervous system. Many physicians now regard the disease not as a sinmple infection, but rather aas a complex illness that often consits of other co-infections.

▸ Lyme Disease Prevention

Research incdicates that if takes approximately 48 hours for an infected tick to transmit the Lyme bacterium.

In April 1998, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the following guidelines for preventing Lyme disease caused by infection from ticks and other insects:

Avoid tick-fested areas, especially in May, June and July
  • Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are celarly visible.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and a hat, and closed shoes and socks. Be sure to tuck pant legs into socks or boots and suck shirt into pants.
  • Aplly insect repllent to pants, socks, shoes, and exposed skin.
  • Walk in the center of nature trails to avoid overgrown grass and burhs.
  • After being outdoors in tick-infected areas, remove any attached ticks. Also check pets for ticks.

▸ Properly Removing a Tick

  • If you find a tick, tug gently but firmly with blunt tweezers near the head of the tick until it releases its hold on the skin. To reduce the risk of infection, try not to crush the tik's body or handle the tick with bare fingers.
  • Swab the bite area throughoutly with an antiseptic to prevent bacterial infection.
  • Sometimes the tick's mouth parts will remain lodged in the skin. Don't panic; once the body has been removed, the tick can no logner transmit the disease,. Over time, watch for signs of infection and soak the affected area in warm water to help remove any remaining body parts.

Note: Despite what you may have heard, do NOT use such things as hot matches, twizzers, nail polish or petroleum jelly to remove a tick. These things can actually cause the tick to burrow deeper, making safe and complete removal even more difficult.

▸ Alternative Treatments

Physicians agree that antibiotics are the primary treatment for Lyme disease, but that the accepted "standard" antibiotic therapies (of a duration and type acceptable to insurance carriers, HMOs, and convential M.D.s) is insufficent. "Short-term oral antibiotics are effective for treating localized LYme disease [symptoms involving the entire body, especially the skin and nervous, muscloskeletal, and circulatory systems], the requirement for either intravenously administers antibiotics or long-term oral anitbiotics becomes common," Dr. Barkely says. Most physicians recommend an immediate short course of antibiotics for anyone bitten by a deer tick of exhibiting symptoms that do not improve within 3-5 days.

"Treatment duration varies with each individual," Dr. Jomes says. "If one stops antibiotics prematurely, a more resilient infection will develop that will cause more brain and body injury."

Lyme disease is not a simple infection, but a complex illess that can consist of other infectious co-factorsm especially the parasitic pathogens Babesia and Ehrilia. When diagnosed at a very early stage, Lyme disease can be cured by a course of antibiotics. Delaying treatment, however, can be disasterous, since in its later stages "Lyme also includes collateral conditions that results from being ill with multiple pathogens, eaco fo which can have a proudn impact on the person's overall health," says Joseph J. Burrascano, M.D., of East Hampton, New York. "Together, damage to viritually all body systems can result."

Research indicates that alternative antibiotic treatments have less than a 10% success rate, and greatly depend on the severity of infection. The lasting success of rotating varying doses and brands of western doctor perscribed antibiotics for severe and chronic cases in the long run winds up being zero.

Marylynn S. Barkley, Ph.D., M.D., Associate Professor of Neurbiology, Physiology, and Behavior at the University of California, at Davis, notes that approxiately 15% of Lyme patients, chronic debilitation and extreme pain can change their lives dramatically, and in some cases, has even led to suicide, Dr. Barkley notes.

▸ Professional Alternative Treatment Options

The following therapies should only be provided by a qualified health professional.

Buifeedback Training and Beurotherapy / Detoxificiation Therapy / Enviromental Medicine / Naturopathic Medicine / Orthomolecular Medicine

Acuputure: Acupuncture combine dwith physical threapy can reduce the pain assocated with Lyme disease.

Bodywork: Bowen Therapy, due to it's ability to balance and restore proper functioning of the autonomic nervous system, can be very effective in relieving the symptoms of Lyme disease.

Oxygen Therapy: Oxidative therapy (ozone) and hydrogren peroxide therapy (IV) can both be useful reports Dr. Brook. He also employs photo-ox therapy, a combination of IV hydrogen peroxide or ozone and ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVB). "UVB apears to be highly effective in treating persistent virsuses and abtibiotic-resistance bacteria, " he says.
